Have you tried completing the exercises on the newest version of Kali? Most software you are going to need should be pre-installed. I will prepare the suggested official box (without upgrading it) just to test the exploits (if I am going to write some). Unfortunately I am not familiar with writing buffer overflow exploits, so I am not sure how this will affect my overall experience. Installing and configuring most tools for the lab on any Debian-based OS you are familiar with should be easier than finding workarounds on a broken and outdated system. My PWK starts on Sunday and since I have booked only 30 lab days, I wanted to be prepared to start right away. A non upgradable VM you can’t install additional (up to date) software on, is the worst setup for a 24h exam I can imagine. I will just stick to the current Kali version since they are running pretty stable in Fusion. You could well jump straight from HTB to PWK and pass the OSCP but there is still a lot to. ![]() it will be helpful to read through the N etwork Guidance on the lab structure and use the recommended Kali Linux VM. Honestly I thought that it might be a hidden first test for your motivation and to get you in the mood of desperation. Complete the Windows and Linux buffer overflow sections in the PWK PDF (they were updated for PWK 2020 and are simple to follow).
